Interior Design Process Explained: Where Every Project Begins

When people think about interior design, they often imagine selecting finishes or furniture. But the most important part of the interior design process happens earlier, during the discovery phase, where decisions are guided by how you live, not just how a space looks.

We do think about how a space looks, but what matters most is how it feels to live in. How you move through your home, gather with others, and return to it at the end of the day. That’s where the interior design process begins.

The Discovery Phase of the Interior Design Process

Every project begins long before layouts or materials are selected. It starts with understanding you-how you live, what you’re drawn to, what isn’t working in your current space. This phase is often overlooked, but it’s the most important. Because without it, design can feel scattered or overwhelming. Like there are too many directions and no clear path forward. With the discovery phase, everything becomes more focused, more intentional, more you.

Good design doesn't happen overnight, and honestly it shouldn't.

Why This Takes Time

There is so much happening behind the scenes before anything is ever presented. We’re getting to know how you live. What you’re drawn to, what isn’t working.

We’re listening, refining, editing and shaping everyone’s ideas into a clear direction. Not to limit you, but to make the process easier. So when we present a design, it isn’t a starting point. It’s a direction that’s already been thoughtfully considered.

Design Presentations-

Where Ideas Take Shape

The work we do in the discovery phase is so important to reducing decision fatigue and revisions as the project moves forward. By the time you come in for your design presentation, we have a good sense of who you are, what you love, what you’re drawn to.

Our hope is that when you see your design presentation, it feels immediately familiar, like it was always meant to be your home. Because we’ve taken the time to understand you first.

This is what we call the discovery phase, and it's the foundation of every project we take on. We’re sharing more of this in our Thoughtful Design Series, a new series where we take you behind the scenes of our process and the thinking that shapes each space. If you’re curious what this actually looks like in practice, you can watch the full conversation below.

If you're starting to think about your own home, we’d love to guide you through the process.
