The Art of Styling a Coffee Table Begins with these Key Essentials

Styling coffee tables (or ottomans, desks, built-in shelves, really anything!) is one of our favorite parts of client installations and is the key to making your space look polished and pulled together. Here are some of our designer tips to help you get it just right:

  1. Start with a Books: You can never have enough coffee table books in our opinion! Stack books directly on the table. Look for books with interesting covers that reflect your passions or travels. The color of the books is also key for making the space feel interesting and cohesive.

  2. Add a Tray: A decorative tray can anchor your coffee table and keep smaller items organized. Choose a tray that complements the style of your room, whether it's a beautiful brass, rustic wood, or marble.

  3. Include Decorative Objects: Add items like candles, vases, or small sculptures. These elements add texture and visual interest.

  4. Incorporate Greenery: A potted plant or fresh flowers is key and brings life and color to your coffee table. Choose low-maintenance plants if you don’t want to worry about upkeep!

5. Use Coasters: Stylish coasters are both practical and decorative. They protect your table and will add another layer of texture. We like rattan, wood or marble coasters.

6. Mix Heights: Vary the height and scale/size of your decor items. A combination of tall and short objects creates a more dynamic and balanced look.

7. Add Personal Touches: Incorporate items that reflect your personality or interests, like a unique antique or a quirky object that evokes a found memory.

8. Consider Scale and Proportion: Ensure that the items you choose are proportional to the size of your coffee table. Avoid items that are too large or too small in comparison to the table. Also use a combination of larger and smaller objects to create interest; not all items should be the same size.

9. Use a Variety of Colors and Textures: Make sure all of your objects are not the same color or texture. We typically use something brass, something glass, something black, something wood/natural and something green!

10. Maintain Balance: Arrange items in a way that feels balanced. This doesn’t necessarily mean symmetrical, but it should feel harmonious.

11. Keep It Functional: Remember that the coffee table is often a functional piece of furniture. Leave some space clear for practical use, like placing drinks or snacks or putting your feet up.

12. Have Fun with it + Mix it up Every Once in a While: Have fun with the process! Go on a hunt for vintage pieces, collect items that bring you joy. And change it up every once in a while. Move objects from one space to another to keep it new and interesting!
